things i wish i could tell my dog1. waiting and watching the door
won’t make them come back any sooner,
trust me on this one.
2. i know sometimes you yell as loud
as you can and people just tell you
to hush. sometimes you can scream your heart out
and no one will pay attention to you.
3. puppy dog eyes won’t get you through
school.
4. why the hell did you go and make me
the center of your whole world?
(i’m sorry i can’t do the same)
5. i know i’m good at leaving
but bad at coming back.
you’re good at staying.
6. the rabbits you dream about are brown,
your tail is always right behind you,
the delivery man doesn’t really want to kill us,
you’re a good dog.
7. when you’re sad, don’t eat chocolate.
lay down and wait for things
to be better because eventually
things get better, but sometimes
you have to watch the change to really
notice it.
8. if you ever find yourself on the street,
staring down the road hom half-priced whoremaybe in fifty years,
she thinks,
she will stop feeling his finger-shaped bruises
on her hips and arms.
stop hearing his words—you think you can stop me, little girl?—
in every passing "are you okay?".
stop feeling the wind like a ghost of his acid breath
on the back of her neck
beautiful, beautiful, beautiful little girl.
maybe fifty thousand dove soap bars later
and too many scalding showers
and dusty baby blankets and days spent lying in bed,
looking up at the water stained ceiling,
will be enough to leave the man
on the corner of anderson street and rosa parks avenue
right where she never wanted to find him.
just ask her, she knows first hand
that worlds don't end in bangs but
in whimpers
she knows what it's like to die with a fist
over your mouth and fear in your nostrils.
pretend she is made out of ashes and paper thin words—mourn
the loss of her innocence, her freedom, her control.
cast her out into the ocean to dissolve among the waves,
find her a god dirty enough the man on the moon.tonight
the sky is overcast, and it tells me
That if I want to make my stupid wishes,
I'd better come back at a better time.

the clouds are being overprotective
And covering the moon with their hair so
Us humans cannot see her cry.

there is no wind to blow our
American flags, and if I close my eyes,
I think I could imagine myself there.

I think I can see his steps treading
On the face of the man in the moon,
The steps that will stay longer than the man did.

I flip through the pages of my history book,
And watch the night out of my window
As I read the same name over and over again,
"this is one small step for man; one giant leap for mankind."

the moon mourns the loss of
the first man to touch her. lights like it's godshe wants her veins to be bigger
so they can hug the room when it starts spinning.
she wants a time machine and more storms.
she doesn't want an 'It's Gonna Be Okay'.
she wants an end.
except i'm not sure i know what you
want anymore, sister.
i think you want to sleep it away.
i think you want to stop the yelling.
i surrounded our old childhood playground
with real world problems, sister.
then doused it in too-expensive gasoline
and lit the whole damn thing on fire
so no one can touch those ours my memories.
is that what you want?
memories from the days when your problems were
so simple you didn't need a knife or needle to solve them.
when your skin still stuck to your bones and your mouth
was covered in red popsicle and smiles.
when you told me snowflakes were souls and ash
falling to hell.
when you still believed in god and jesus and mom and dad
and me.
of course, we had our fights.
fights as loud as thunder and cliches and
sometimes our mothe Strong GirlI'm the strong girl.
I don't cry,
I don't  fall,
I don't lose.
I'm the strong one
The one who cheats,
Who lies,
Who wins.
But you always have a way of making
This strong girl
Feel oh so
Weak.
Like now, for example.
I'm standing before you,
With all my carefully constructed
Walls and barriers
Lying in tatters on the floor.
You're laughing in glee because
You've gotten inside the strong girl
And torn her apart with
Fake promises.
And I'm crying because
Damn it, it hurts when your
Heart's broken.
I'm not strong now
(I don't think I'll ever be again)
Because when something is broken
Into a thousand pieces
Chances are no one will be able to find
All the parts.
Especially since you aren't coming back
This time;
And you made up at least
Half of me.
We were friends
For years
Then we were
More than friends.
Now…
I'm afraid we're nothing
And not seeing you at all sounds more
Like a death sentence
Than just seeing you happy
With another girl.
